For years I've wrestled with securing pieces to my bench that are to be edge planed - particularly for narrow or short boards. Sometimes my clamping systems worked - sometimes not so well. This holdfast makes it much easier (and quicker) to clamp a piece securely near an edge of the bench. I'm sure more uses will be revealed in time.
I advise that you wipe it off before putting it on your bench if you care about keeping your bench looking good. It came coated with oil and metal cruft that will stain.
