"Improvment over carpenters pencils" 2010-03-09By

Number 1 reason I got this was because it stays the same length. It is surprisingly accurate when sharp. I've only used it for framing so far but its obvious I'll be able to use it for basic finish work as well.
One drawback is the leads break inside the pencil. Apparently, the pencil flexes, being made of plastic.
Over all, I'd recommend it.

The leads break, the leads jam, it costs almost as much in shipping as the cost of the product. An extremely poor value for the money.

Bought this and several other types of mechanical carpenters pencils to try because I got tired of constantly sharpening wooden carpenter pencils for construction work. After using it a few months I am very pleased. The function is good, the pencil body is strong and the lead has teeth so it is held tightly in the pencil body. There are two ways to use it. For any masonry, rough carpentry, tile layout or any outdoor work the lead works fine as is. The line is dark enough and thin enough. For anything where I need to have a finer line I rub it a few times on cement or on a piece of wood to make the lead line a little finer.
If you drop it that can break the lead inside as another reviewer commented. Its happened to me occasionally, but it is still a lot better than the old way. I'm not going back. Highly recommended.
"Never sharpen = Never sharp. Poor Quality." 2009-08-23By

The purpose of this little guy is to avoid spending time sharpening your pencils, of course. It accomplishes that, at least for a while - but it falls short of being an improvement. Never sharpening a pencil means it is never sharp - which may be fine if you only need +/- 1/8" accuracy - but don't expect anything better than the dull, rounded end that usually signals the need for a sharpening.
This is what using the STRIKER will be like for the first few days. After that, the cheaply assembled plastic body begins to separate, the lead is no longer held in place, and the pencil gets thrown away.
My two STRIKERs didn't last long enough to need any of the lead refills they came with. Don't bother with this one.

I picked up one of these based on a recommendation from another site, to round out an Amazon order I was making. I'm in the middle of remodeling a bathroom so I had a good opportunity to try it out. It operates like any other mechanical pencil, though the lead is quite thick and requires sharpening to get a fine enough point for accurate measurement, kind of defeating the purpose. I had just started using it, marking some wood to cut, when I tried to pull off the clip end, thinking there may be an eraser underneath, and it broke! the black tip which holds the lead retracted in to the body enough it cracked up both sides, rendering it useless.
